Quantum Computing And The Value Of Storytelling In Science
  • Station Q is a Microsoft Research post staffed with some of the brightest mathematicians and researchers on the planet, working to solve the basic questions of quantum computing. Last week Microsoft published an compelling tale on how its researchers and scientists are forging ahead in the race to answer the questions of quantum mechanics and eventually, build a stable quantum computer.
  • Quantum computing is the most important burgeoning field of computer science and research that could have the most profound evolutionary effect on the human race of any technology ever discovered. But most people have no idea what it is and it is an extremely hard story to tell.
  • A fundamental conundrum exists in the realm of scientific research: those that know how to tell the stories of their work are heard (and subsequently funded) while those who are poor at storytelling are often forgotten and neglected, regardless of the quality of their work.
  • For scientists, storytelling is almost an evolutionary trait. The better story tellers get their message out there which means that their work will receive more scrutiny (and hence, validation if they are right) than lesser storytellers.

Should We Stop Teaching Calculus In High School?
  • Math education needs a reboot. Kids today are growing up into a world awash in data, and they need new skills to make sense of it all.
  • The list of high school math courses in the U.S. hasn’t changed for decades: algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. These are all fine subjects, but they don’t serve the needs of the 21st century.
  • What math courses do young people really need? Two subjects are head-smackingly obvious: computer science and statistics. Most high schools don’t offer either one. With computers controlling so much of their lives, from their phones to their cars to the online existence, we ought to teach our kids what’s going on under the hood. And programming will teach them a form of logical reasoning that is missing from the standard math curriculum.
  • It's an interesting argument but: Why couldn't schools teach all three subjects?

WriteLaTeX Picks Up Funding to Push its Collaborative Academic Writing Tool

  • WriteLaTeX saves the day by providing a collaborative writing web service that streamlines the publishing process. And now it can improve its service, thanks to an investment it announced last week from Digital Science, a division of Macmillan Science and Education, which publishes Nature, Scientific American, and other titles.
  • WriteLaTeX provides an online service called Overleaf that enables researchers to write papers together using the LaTeX markup language. More than 50,000 authors from more than 1,000 institutions have created more than 500,000 projects with Overleaf, according to WriteLaTeX’s website.
