MIT releases its plans for the future of education: 2020 and beyond MIT
On February 2013 L. Rafael Reif, President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), announced the launch of an Institute-wide Task Force that will be in charge of imagine new possibilities and identify a broad range of opportunities about the future of MIT education.
After 18 months of campus-wide discussion, analysis and introspection, MIT’s Task Force released the final report detailing its recommendations to help MIT evolve for a new world. Organized around four main themes, 16 recommendations are aimed to lay the groundwork for MIT to reinvent education for future generations of learners both on its campus and beyond.
Princeton Faculty Group Recommends Axing Policy That Limits A’s The Chronicle of Higher Education
A faculty committee at Princeton University has recommended that the institution scrap its policy limiting the A’s handed out by each department, over time, to 35 percent of grades.
The committee recommended that the numerical benchmarks be replaced by general grading standards set forth by each department. “We suggest that this sort of continuing conversation is a more effective and positive way of having an appropriate grading policy, and with fewer undesirable side effects, than setting numerical targets”.
OpenStax developing textbooks that deliver personalized lessons University Business
Rice University-based nonprofit OpenStax, which has already provided free textbooks to hundreds of thousands of college students, today announced a $9 million effort to develop free, digital textbooks capable of delivering personalized lessons to high school students
OpenStax officials said the pioneering K-12 education project, which is funded by a grant from the Laura and John Arnold Foundation (LJAF ), will use the same kind of technology that Google, Amazon and Netflix rely upon to deliver personalized search, retail and entertainment choices.
OpenStax's latest project is unique in more than one respect. It marks the nonprofit's first venture in the K-12 educational space as well as its first effort to enhance books technologically to improve education outcomes in addition to educational access.
What Are the Most Powerful Uses of Tech for Learning? Read/Write
There are a lot of powerful tools for change available to educators and plenty of creative, inspired educators working hard to put available technology to work in classrooms. A lack of excellence is not the problem in education; access to technology and guidance for participating in the digital space in powerful ways are much bigger challenges.
That is the message Karen Cator, president and CEO of Digital Promise and former head of the Office of Technology at the US Department of Education, is spreading around the country. “When we think about students who do not have access to these kinds of powered-up learning environments, that’s a problem,” Cator said at a presentation sponsored by SVForum, a non-profit that organizes ed-tech events.
From Cator’s perspective, the digital learning gap can be broken down into three parts: access, participation and powerful use.
In 2013, 7.1 million higher education students took at least one online course — a 6.1 percent increase over the previous year, according to a report from the Online Learning Consortium (the recently renamed Sloan Consortium). That means more than 400,000 additional students took an online course last year.
While many colleges and universities do a good job offering faculty development programs for online teaching, they can't possibly keep up with that kind of growth. The demand for tips and best practices for online instruction is seemingly insatiable.

He offers a wealth of great ideas on how to keep students on track from beginning to end in an online course, from virtual "walls" for sharing course expectations to digital scavenger hunts and confidence-building games.
