The Future of Higher Education Inside Higher Ed
Institutions are disrupting themselves from the inside out. True disruption occurs when existing institutions begin to embrace the forces of transformation.
The innovations taking place may not seem to be as dramatic as those that loomed in 2012, but the consequences are likely be even more far-reaching, challenging established business and staffing models.
Let’s begin by looking at ten innovations that are slowly but surely being incorporated into higher ed, and then to five new educational models that are gradually emerging.
These ten innovations are: Learning Analytics, Microcredentialing, Competency-Based Education, Personalized Adaptive Learning, Curricular Optimization, Open Educational Resources, Shared Services, Articulation Agreements, Flipped Classrooms and One-Stop Student Services.
Five new educational models: New Pathways to a Bachelors Degree; The Bare-bones University; Experimental Models; Corporate Universities and All of the Above.

The Connected Educator: All About Connectedness Edutopia
With Connected Educator Month now upon us, I thought it would be fitting for folks to share their experiences in becoming what we call a "connected educator."
But too often, connected educators are the worst advocates for becoming a connected educator. They tend to overwhelm the uninitiated with a huge list of collaborative accomplishments and a plethora of technological jargon.
The result is that the unconnected educators simply view it as complicated, time-consuming, extra stuff to add to an already overloaded agenda.
With that in mind, here are some stories of moving from unconnectedness to connectedness.
Experts Unite to Create Connected Learning Network Online Educa Berlin
What happens when a group of “leaders in open education” (including the likes of Howard Rheingold, Helen Keegan, Michael Wesch and Mimi Ito) get together to share best practices and thrash out ways to make connected learning available to everyone?
You get Connected Courses – an online collaborative network that it’s basically a Connected Course on How to Develop a Connected Course.
Connected Courses is both a collaborative network focused on connected learning and the open web, and a connected course on connected courses. It’s a development of Reclaim Open Learning, a Digital Media and Learning Initiative supported by the MacArthur Foundation.
New Report Urges University Libraries to Consider Their Role in Discovery Inside Higher Ed
As faculty members and students find new ways to locate scholarly research, a new report encourages college and university libraries to re-evaluate whether their efforts to connect users with content are money well-spent.
The challenge comes from the nonprofit research organization Ithaka S+R. The report asks university libraries to examine what they called one of the “linchpin issues” scholars face in their research: How can they find what they need, and how can libraries help them?
The library’s traditional role as the gateway to research is one of many that are being challenged by technology. That's why many university libraries have at least tried to imitate Google and other search providers’ design, but the search experience is often identical for the graduate student of philosophy and the tenured professor of physics. Google, however, uses data collected from past searches to build user profiles and recommend personalized results.
These are hard problems for libraries and for publishers and for that whole community, but they matter tremendously across academia. They directly affect every faculty member and student who want to discover the things they need as quickly and efficiently as possible.
How Blended Learning Transforms Roles and Relationships Canadian Education Association
As our modern economy shifts from the industrial era to an age of knowledge workers, we increasingly need an education system that teaches students to work in collaborative teams, master higher-order knowledge and skills, and creatively solve complex technical and social problems.
For this kind of education to be possible, we need to be able to customize instruction in order to address each student’s unique learning needs. Blended learning is an innovative type of instructional model that integrates online learning with face-to-face instruction to create personalized learning opportunities for students.
Blended learning is a powerful enabler of personalized instruction, but the shift to high-quality blended learning is no small task. Many educators from around the world are finding creative ways to implement blended learning within their existing classrooms and schools. Here are some examples from the field.
Twitter, MIT Create New Research Lab to Analyze Every Tweet The Wall Street Journal
With a $10 million investment from Twitter, data scientists at MIT’s Media Lab are creating a new research group that will get access to Twitter’s entire feed of real-time and archived public tweets. This is Twitter’s first financial foray into academic research.
The Laboratory for Social Machines aims to better understand how information spreads on Twitter and other social media platforms. MIT Media Lab said it plans to build data visualizations, mobile apps and other tools to “create new forms of public communication and social organization.
The investment follows on the heels of the Twitter Data Grants program, launched in February. The program, which gives institutions access to Twitter’s public and historical data, attracted over 1,300 applications. Six institutions were selected in April.
